Day 101 (26 June): Throw away your spectacles
Updated: Jun 29
Back at Chateau Neil I was drinking a mug of coffee and contemplating nothing in particular when my gaze slipped over the cover of a book entitled “A Guide to Sexual Entertainment” by Eckhart Tolle.
Intrigued I put on my specs and reached for the publication.
The title turned out to be “A Guide to Spiritual Enlightenment” which is valid and positively stuffed with merit, but less than titillating.
It did, however, make me think that perhaps we should cast off our glasses.
If we were to stop looking too closely at things we could all be happier creatures.
Alfie concurs in this line of thinking, but as she has never worn glasses I figure her agreement springs more from emotional solidarity than from any deep intellectual conviction.
Oops! I am doing it again you see - analysing Alfie’s motivation instead of graciously accepting her support.
I clearly have the unfortunate tendency to intellectualise and over-analyse. Give me one slender point of data and I will build on top of it an inverted pyramid of possible future outcomes, all held together by a tenuous string of ‘ifs’.
In point of fact, or the closest these posts ever get to fact, most possible futures we construct seem to be largely composed of wishful thinking, magical thinking and anxious fretting.
Imagine what it must be like to be God?
He does this for a living on an industrial scale.
I think I would do better to leave it all to him as he has more resources, larger bandwidth, infinite time and much more experience.
I should concentrate on learning how to live my best life with what is and not what could have, might have or should have been.
That then is my conclusion. Live fully in the what is.
This is the final post of the Insulation Report. I would like to thank you for your interest, support and encouragement. I hope I have brought the occasional smile to your lips and perhaps brought a smattering of comfort to your difficult moments.
I shall now be writing a blog called ‘Neil’s World’ at Medium.Com. It is unlikely to be any better or wiser but the topics might be a tad more varied.
The Insulation report posts will be copied over as a foundation and I will build up from there.
Just as soon as everything is set up and in place I will make a mini-post here with the links so that you can find me - just in case you are so bored that your choice is between reading my stuff or pushing a corkscrew up your nose.
Tip: Go with my stuff.
All my warmest wishes!
